Dr Catherine Brignell is Senior Teaching Fellow within Psychology at the University of Southampton.

BSc Psychology, (University College London), 1998

Research Assistant (St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College) 1998-1999. Cognitive and subjective dose-response effects of acute oral Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in infrequent cannabis users.

PhD Psychology (University College London) 2003. A psychopharmacological exploration of memory for emotional material.

Research Associate. (MRC Cyclotron Building, Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College), 2003-2004. The long term effects of MDMA (ecstasy) on mood, information processing, and the brain.

  • Cognitive psychopharmacology
  • Substance use, abuse and dependence

Work in Progress

Research projects currently in progress include investigations of:

  • The association between eating behaviour, cognitive control and inhibitory deficits
  • The effect of negative mood on subjective appetite, selective attention, and approach to food cues
  • The effect of alcohol on cognitive bias for food cues
  • The effect of non-nutritive sweeteners on cognitive bias for food cues
  • Impulsivity, delay discounting, and eating behaviour
  • Thought suppression and cognitive bias for food cues
  • Acute effects of alcohol on memory in an emotional context
