Research project: Investigation into spatial learning

Currently Active:
Yes

In collaboration with Prof. Liam Gray, School of Medicine, University of Southampton, we are examining the effects of neurogenesis (the development of new cells) within the hippocampus on encoding spatial memory.

Our research encompasses both animal and human studies. In the animal work a water maze is used to assess a rat's ability to find a submerged platform located below landmarks suspended above the pool. In the human studies, the performance of epilepsy patients is assessed using a virtual water maze developed in conjunction with one of our collaborators Dr Derek Hamilton of University of New Mexico.
