About the Electrophysiology instruments

We have a range of electrophysiology instruments capable of measuring electrical fields in both sectioned explants and adherent cells. We use both field recording and patch clamp methods.

We are located on Highfield Campus.

Highlights include

  • 3 Patch clamp rigs
  • 3 Field recording rigs
  • 2 invertebrate rigs

Part of: Imaging and microscopy facility

Technical specification

Patch clamp set ups

Two rigs that can be adapted according to experimental needs, features;

  • movable upright microscope (field of view can be adjusted with electrodes already placed in sample).
  • micromanipulators (patch star or Luigs and Newmann)
  • national instruments acquisition board coupled to Matlab data acquisition
  • WinEDR, WCP
  • GFP/RFP fluorescence (LED or mercury lamp)
  • axopatch 200B, Multiclamp 700B
  • MVCS-02C iontophoresis delivery
  • warner bath temperature controller
  • carbogen supply
  • warming bath

Field recording set up

  • record from up to four chambers simultaneously with interface chamber or submerged chamber mode (Campden Instruments slice workstation)
  • national instruments acquisition board coupled to Matlab data acquisition
  • WinEDR, WCP

Xenopus oocyte recording set up

  • oocyte incubation chambers, injector (see microinjection equipment available IMC)
  • oocyte recording chamber
  • solution switching system (Autom8 - pinch valve 4-8 channels available)

Inverted patch clamp set up

  • leica Inverted microscope
  • RFP / GFP/ DAPI
  • warner bath temperature controller
  • carbogen supply
  • warming bath
