High energy laboratory

More Information

About the High energy laboratory

The high energy laboratory provides additional off-campus space to allow testing and operation of high voltage and power energy storage and production systems. It is mainly used for testing renewable energy generation systems and energy storage systems.

We integrate and optimise these systems to create viable off-grid energy solutions to electric vehicle (EV) charging, particularly for remote areas or those without suitable grid connections. It includes, disassembly of second life EV Battery packs for reassembly into static energy storage units.

Technical specification

High power bi-directional grid connection

Bi-directional distribution board with a greater system capacity than is available on Highfield campus.

External containerised system test facility

External container designed for remote testing of energy storage systems. Including a 32-amp, three-phase electrical supply and cabled connectivity to the university IT network for monitoring and datalogging. This facility is separate from the energy laboratory but is controlled by the laboratory staff.

Multifuel combustion engine testing

Hydrogen, ammonia and others. Externally connected exhaust and coolant pipes, gas cage and additional pipework for fuel gas supplies.
