The Interdisciplinary Centre for Magnetic Resonance combines a broad and complementary expertise in magnetic resonance research spanning from the dynamics of nuclear spins to the understanding of the biological processes that regulate our lives.

Magnetic resonance at the University of Southampton is organized as a Research Centre that spans across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine. The research team affiliated to the Centre are:

  • the groups of Dr. Giuseppe Pileio (Director of the Centre), Professor Malcolm H. Levitt, Professor Ilya Kuprov (now at Weizmann Institute), Professor Marina Carravetta, and Dr. Christian Bengs, based in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
  • the groups of Professor Philip T. Williamson and Profrssor Jöern M. Werner, based in the School of Biological Sciences
  • the group of Professor Jonathan Swann, based in the School of Medicine.

The Section also benefits from the contributions of Emeritus Professor James W. Emsley, the Research Engineer Dr. Marek Plata, and the inestimable enthusiasm and dedication of about 30 people between PhD students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
