About us

We investigate one of the most common and meaningful human experiences: nostalgia.

Nostalgia was once viewed primarily as a longing for the past but is now recognised as a predominantly positive emotion with important benefits for wellbeing, resilience and social connection.

Nostalgia often centres on meaningful memories involving close relationships, significant life events and valued places. Although it is a self-relevant emotion, with the individual typically at the centre of the remembered experience, it is also inherently social, as nostalgic memories frequently involve family members, friends and romantic partners.

Our research explores the nature of nostalgic memories and their influence on thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

We study:

  • what triggers nostalgia
  • how it is experienced across cultures and throughout the lifespan
  • the psychological processes through which it affects people

A major focus of our work is understanding how nostalgia contributes to psychological wellbeing.

Through our research, we continue to advance understanding of the causes, experiences and psychological functions of nostalgia.
