Research project

Measuring the Future: AI and the Reinvention of Official Statistics

Project overview

Web Science Institute Pilot Funded ethnography of the Office for National Statistics.

This pilot project examines how the Office for National Statistics is adapting its quality assurance practices as artificial intelligence and machine learning methods enter statistical production. Through interviews with ONS methodologists and data scientists, and analysis of internal documentation, the study investigates how established standards for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of official statistics are being extended to accommodate algorithmic approaches. The project will generate preliminary findings to inform a larger programme of research on AI adoption in national statistical offices across several countries.
