Project overview
This project investigates the use of autonomous robotic systems for scalable monitoring and measurement of forest environments. The research explores how mobile robots equipped with relatively low-cost sensing can collect spatially distributed information about forest structure and condition, complementing conventional manual and stationary surveying approaches.
Current work includes mobile LiDAR mapping and estimation of forest structural properties and biomass, including evaluation against established surveying methods. The project also investigates how swarms and multi-robot systems can enable monitoring over larger spatial scales, including applications such as the detection and localisation of forest pests.
The broader aim is to develop practical, scalable robotic approaches for repeated forest observation that combine autonomous sensing, distributed coverage and environmental measurement, supporting forestry, ecological monitoring and improved understanding of changing forest resources.
