Dr Viktor Orri Valgarðsson is a Research Fellow at the TrustGov research project, which explores the nature, causes, consequences and patterns of political trust around the world.

My research focuses on global trends in political support and participation – and the implications of those trends for the state of democracy in the world

My research at TrustGov focuses on global trends in different work history types of political support, and the relationship between political trust and patterns of political participation.

Before joining TrustGov, I was a Teaching Fellow in Quantitative Comparative Politics at Durham University. I did my PhD in Political Science and MSc in Governance & Policy at the University of Southampton. Before that, I worked at the Social Science Research Institute at the University of Iceland and did my BA in Political Science there.

My PhD research was on the decline of voter turnout in many established democracies, exploring the role of political apathy and alienation in explaining those trends in Western Europe.

My interest lies especially in understanding what these trends in political support and participation mean for democracy in the modern age, and if and how democratic systems need to be reformed in light of those developments. Within that broad remit, I am interested in various aspects of public opinion and behaviour, primarily using quantitative methods and survey data.

My research has been published in the journals Political Studies, Scandinavian Political Studies, Political Research Quarterly (forthcoming), Globalizations and Icelandic Review of Politics & Administration.
