About the project

The aim of this project is to develop a flexible, high-throughput imaging system that can monitor human cells in a vaccine production bioreactor. The project will work closely with a local company that is already producing vaccines in bioreactor systems.  

Samples will be continuously drawn through a microfluidic channel and aligned with acoustic focussing to present them to the optical imaging system. Using real-time artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, the system will seek to optimise the growing conditions to maintain reliable cell growth.

Having this feedback system is of great interest as maintaining bioreactors in good condition is not simple. Using machine learning (AI) to optimise, monitor and assess biological systems is a growing area in great demand in related areas of diagnosing disease, developing new drugs and research into cell biology.

You will join a world-leading research group that is pioneering a range of cell imaging and microfluidic systems with a particular focus on acoustic particle manipulation.  

The project will require you to acquire skills in a wide range of areas:

  • microfluidic design
  • imaging
  • machine learning
  • electronics
  • ultrasound
  • programming.  

A background in some of these would be ideal, but we can provide training to support whatever experience you bring. We are looking for an exceptional candidate who is able to learn additional skills as necessary.
