Biography
Martyn graduated from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research in Southampton with a BSc in Engineering Acoustics and Vibration. He subsequently worked on a variety of biomedical and industrial parameter estimation and measurement problems. He was appointed as a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1990 and was later promoted to Senior Lecturer then Reader before appointment as Professor of Electromechanical Systems in 2008.
Martyn has held a number of leadership roles in Southampton including Deputy Head (Education) of the School of Engineering Sciences (2006-2009) and Head of Engineering Sciences between 2011 and 2015, during which time he led 50 academic staff and their researchers. In his subsequent role as Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (2018-2021) he provided operational and strategic leadership for engineering, chemistry, physics and computer science programmes comprising about 5,500 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
