About the project

There is increasing concern over the widespread accumulation of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in our rivers and ecosystems. The aim of this project is to develop cell-like compartments for the removal of POPs that can’t be achieved by conventional methods.

Artificial cells are micro-sized structures with features allowing them to mimic some of the functions of biological cells. They provide new opportunities for chemical processing with natural catalysts and can be tuned to maximise reactivity under non-natural conditions. Exciting progress has been made in the development of artificial cells, but challenges remain in their implementation in real-world applications.

In this project you will combine experiments with computational models of artificial cells for their eventual implementation in water-treatment. The research will involve design and development of bioreactors with artificial cells. Many technologies for removal of POPs are energy intensive, expensive or inefficient.

This work will provide valuable new insights into the coupling between catalytic reaction and mass transport for efficient removal of persistent pollutants from the environment.

You will join a team working at the interface of chemistry, engineering and the environmental sciences.

The research requires willingness to collaborate with and visit other researchers across Europe as part of the project.

Some prior experience of modelling in science or engineering is required; however we will provide full training for the artificial cell-based application.

The School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering is committed to promoting equality, diversity inclusivity as demonstrated by our Athena SWAN award.
