About the project

This PhD project aims to open new frontiers in nanophotonics by designing and fabricating a new class of miniaturized optical sources. These sources will allow light emission in a broad frequency spectrum well beyond what is possible with current lasers.  These sources will find application in several fields: from medicine, as primary components of non-invasive breath analysers for cancer diagnosis; to security, both for the detection of explosives and for the development of efficient anti-missile systems in civil aircrafts; up to environment, for the monitoring of air pollution and green energy generation.

Join us to pioneer the next generation miniaturized optical sources!

You will work at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, in the Multimode Photonics Group led by Dr. Massimiliano Guasoni. You will acquire a broad range of advanced skills in nanofabrication as well as in theoretical, computational and experimental photonics.

You will have access to some among the best equipped laboratories and nanofabrication research facilities in the world (£ 120M worth), and to one of the most powerful supercomputers in UK.
You will interact on a daily basis with world-leading scientists at the ORC that are revolutionizing the field of photonics, and you will have the opportunity to engage with several ORC industrial partners. Furthermore, you will present your work both in leading academic journals and at the most renowned conferences all over the world, which will allow you to engage with the best researchers worldwide.
In the first year of your PhD, a structured training program will run along with the research project, which will allow a gradual transition from a taught degree to independent research.

The ORC PhD will prepare you for a successful career as a top research scientist or business leader in academia and in industry.
