About the project

Quantum networks could transform how we communicate, share information and connect quantum computers. This PhD will investigate specialty optical fibres and develop components to make quantum networks more reliable and practical. Closely linked to the EPSRC-funded BOUNDLESS and HASC programmes, you will gain hands-on experience in advanced photonics and future communications.

Quantum technologies could change how we communicate, process information and measure the world around us. Optical fibres will play a key role in connecting quantum devices and building future quantum networks. However, these networks need better fibre connections and components to carry very weak quantum signals with minimal loss and disturbance.

This PhD project will investigate specialty optical fibres and develop new fibre components for next-generation quantum networks. You will explore hollow-core and multicore fibres, test their performance and design components that connect different fibre systems and quantum devices. The work will combine optical modelling, hands-on experiments and optical measurements. You may also explore how well these fibres carry single photons and how stable the signals remain under different conditions.

You will join the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, a leading research centre in optical fibres and photonics. The project is closely linked to two major UK EPSRC-funded research programmes: BOUNDLESS (Boundless Light) and HASC (Hubs in All-Spectrum Connectivity), offering opportunities to engage with wider research activities in advanced photonics and future communication networks. You will gain hands-on experience in fibre technology, optical system development and advanced measurement techniques, while working in a collaborative research environment.

The School of Optoelectronics (ORC) is committed to promoting equality, diversity inclusivity as demonstrated by our Athena SWAN award. We welcome all applicants regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or age, and will give full consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and those who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy, onsite childcare facilities, and offers a range of benefits to help ensure employees’ well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.
