Third-year BM5 Medicine student Kitty talks about what makes her course enjoyable and how research is shaping her future career.
I love Medicine at Southampton. The workload is definitely heavy, as you’d expect, but the people on the course are amazing. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging and really make it enjoyable.
I’ve enjoyed being on placement because it’s so rewarding. We get to apply everything we learnt in the first few years and see it all come together in real-life scenarios. It has helped my learning and motivation.
Research opportunities
I’ve loved the research side of the course. It’s such a great way to explore medicine from a different angle.
In my third year, I completed a 16-week research project, and I’m currently doing a lab-based project for my Integrated Masters in Medical Science. Both are such a great way to enhance my medical portfolio.
I’m now writing a paper for publication, and I’ve already presented a poster at a national event. I’ve also had an abstract published and been awarded second place in a national undergraduate competition run by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
These experiences have helped me explore different areas of medicine that I might not have otherwise encountered and strengthened my academic and professional development.
Looking forward
My main ambition is to become a doctor, but I am not sure which speciality yet. However, I want to combine clinical practice with medical research.
Research is something I enjoy not only on a personal level but also because of the broader impact it can have on improving patient care and advancing the field of medicine. I hope to build a career that allows me to contribute to both areas.
