Getting involved helped me step outside my comfort zone

Coming to University can be a daunting time for anyone. Southampton’s supportive environment and range of student societies allowed Ashpreet to thrive.

I was quite anxious about moving away from home and starting life in a city I had never visited before, but the BM6 course provided an early opportunity to meet peers, as well as senior students on the course. Their advice, along with the warm support from the Sikh Society, made the transition much smoother and helped me feel at home in a new environment.

My experience of studying at Southampton

I really appreciate the integrated structure of the course. The way it is organised around organ systems makes it much easier to connect topics and understand the bigger picture. The University of Southampton offers excellent resources, and I particularly love the library and the wide array of clinical opportunities available. It’s a fantastic place to study medicine.

Shaping my university experience by getting involved in societies

I’ve been an active member of the Sikh Society and served on the committee for two years. This experience has been transformative, helping me develop interpersonal skills such as communication, event management, and teamwork.

Organising events for the society has broadened my perspective and made me more confident - one of the standout moments has been organising Langar on campus, where we served a free meal to over 800 students, promoting equality and community spirit, which are core principles of Sikhism. Serving on a student committee helped develop me step out of my comfort zone
