Research culture

We want to create a culture allowing our research community can flourish. A positive and dynamic research culture is essential for delivering high-quality, collaborative and rigorous research for public good. 4 key principals underpin our vision.

  • Inclusive and respectful

We value diversity of thought, background and experience.

  • Supportive and empowering

We are committed to recognising all contributions and ensuring that individuals can thrive and succeed.

  • Open and responsible

We actively promote open research practices to enhance transparency, reproducibility and collaboration.

  • Collaborative and reciprocal

We foster collaboration and interdisciplinarity. We are proud of our strong commitment to public and civic engagement.

Our action plan (2025 to 2030)

We have a comprehensive, people centred research culture programme. It integrates wellbeing, professional development, inclusivity and public engagement into everyday practice. We deliver this work through our Research Culture Action Plan (2025 to 2030), spanning a wide range of sustained local activities including:

  • a vibrant Postdoctoral Association supporting the professional development and wellbeing of our postdoctoral research staff
  • targeted career development opportunities such as fellowship workshops, grant development sessions with peers (Grants with Coffee)
  • a Transferable Skills Programme of local training and wellbeing activities
  • local pump priming funding for individual researchers or projects and start-up funds for new members of academic staff
  • engaged Medicine empowering staff in public engagements and involvement
  • a Public Contributor Recognition Scheme where we personally recognise public contributors to our health research
  • work/life balance and workplace stress workshops, and meeting free Head Space weeks

We are committed to making a positive difference

Academic Intersectionality Mentoring in Medical Schools (AIMMS)

LifeLab

We collaborated with the National Institute of Health and care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre and University Hospital Southampton to create LifeLab. LifeLab is a unique research-based educational project. It has been recognised nationally for its innovative work to improve the health and wellbeing of young people. More than 16,000 students have visited the facility at Southampton General Hospital since the programme’s inception in 2015. Visit the LifeLab website to find our more.
