iPhD in Applied Linguistics English Language Teaching 2026-27

Applies to all students entering the programme from the 2026/27 academic year:

The taught component of the Integrated PhD in Applied Linguistics English Language Teaching is also subject to the regulations governing Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Postgraduate Master’s Programmes regulations, with exemptions, variations and additional requirements as specified below:

A student is not permitted to refer in any taught module that has already been passed specifically in order to improve the mark, with the following exception:

A student who has failed to achieve the required average pass mark of at least 60 in the taught modules may refer in taught modules in which the mark originally achieved was less than the required average pass mark, to a maximum credit value of 15 ECTS (30 CATS) credits. In this case:

1. Students may choose the taught modules in which they refer, with the constraint that modules in which the mark achieved is a non-compensatable fail must be taken.
2. The actual marks obtained at referral will be inserted into the student’s mark profile to determine whether the required average pass mark (60) has been achieved.
3. Marks for modules originally failed but passed at referral will be capped at the capped mark (50) and published in the student’s transcript. The original marks for modules passed at referral to raise the average mark (60) for the taught modules part, will be published in the student’s transcript.
4. If the student subsequently elects to transfer to the MA Applied Linguistics programme, that part of the referral not needed to meet the requirements of the new programme shall be disregarded and the average mark for the part recalculated on that basis.

Students who elect to transfer to the MA Applied Linguistics programme will be required to successfully complete a 30 ECTS (60 CATS) credit MA dissertation and will be required to pay an additional tuition fee.

Exemption

Students are not required to complete a dissertation. Students follow the guidelines for the Transitional Research Project as set out in the Integrated PhD Policy. The project is non-credit bearing and is designed to develop the student’s research project proposal and support their transition from the taught phase to the research phase of the programme. 

The Transitional Research Project and formative feedback should be part of the documentation submitted by students for their First Progression Review and should be reviewed by the Assessment Panel. 

As the student will not receive credit or a numerical mark for the Transitional Research Project, they may elect to include it (or where appropriate, a modified version) in the PhD thesis that they submit for examination.

Addition

Students must achieve an average pass mark of at least 60 in the taught part of the programme across the 60 ECTS (120 CATS) credit points of prescribed modules.

Applies to all students entering the programme up to and including the 2025/26 academic year:

The taught component is assessed under the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Postgraduate Master’s Programmes regulations with additional requirements below.

1. At the end of Year 1 an overall average mark of 60 or above is required in the taught component and a pass mark of 65 in the research proposal in order to continue to the research phase of the iPhD programme (Part 2).
2. All taught modules in years 2 and 3 must be passed with a mark of 60 or above.
3. Candidates who pass the taught part of the programme but fail to achieve the pass mark for the research proposal may be permitted to undertake supervised research for a Master's dissertation for the award of the MA, provided they have met the requirements of the University’s Regulations for Postgraduate Master’s Programmes.
