Our approach

Our approach to researching moving images is shaped by our joint focus on issues of cultural transfer and exchange, on the strong perception of audio-visual media as transnational and global, rather than purely national, phenomena.

More generally we are committed to exploring the many different ways in which film entails a range of “border crossings”, whether geographical, political, industrial, metaphorical, or aesthetic. From its intermedial origins to present-day digital convergence, film has been caught up amidst a range of intersecting borders.

We also aim to highlight the benefits of inter-disciplinary studies of audio-visual media, encouraging conversations and collaborations between scholars from different subject backgrounds. As a result we welcome varied and innovative methodological and theoretical approaches, and aim to stimulate innovative research into all areas of moving images.
