Marine Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology
This module looks at the roles of marine microbes in the ecosystems as well as in biogeochemical cycling - how they interact with each other, with multicellular organisms and the environments - especially through the use of modern molecular biological tools. We will also look at examples of how these unicellular organisms, their bioproducts, and molecular biology can be used in marine biotechnological applications.
Apart from the subject-specific knowledge mentioned above, you will also gain, as a result, transferable skills in big-data analyses , bioinformatics and molecular biological techniques that can be applied in other fields.
Prior knowledge in basic molecular biology is required.
Please check with the module coordinator, PAT, or the office if you are uncertain when making your module choices. -

Marine Structures
Marine structures must withstand demanding loading conditions throughout their operational lives while remaining safe, efficient and economically viable. From commercial ships to offshore platforms, structural integrity is fundamental to safe and sustainable maritime operations.
In this module, you will build on your knowledge of structural mechanics and apply it to the design and assessment of marine structures. You will develop the analytical skills needed to evaluate structural strength, buckling resistance and overall structural performance under realistic loading conditions. Through engineering analysis and design-focused coursework, you will assess alternative structural solutions, investigate potential failure modes and consider the influence of sustainability, safety and cost on engineering decisions.
By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate and justify marine structural designs using established engineering methods. The knowledge and skills developed will support advanced study in naval architecture and offshore engineering while preparing you for professional roles involving structural design and assessment.
