Heather Mozley is a doctoral student within Medical Education at the University of Southampton.

Research interests

Heather's PhD is a qualitative case study which aims to understand how institutional contexts influence the perceived impact of widening participation and increasing diversity in two UK medical schools.

The research includes 3 strands:

  • An examination of the medical school contexts, including a Critical Discourse Analysis of university webpages
  • A thematic analysis of focus groups, exploring perceptions of widening participation and students from diverse backgrounds
  • An in-depth narrative inquiry exploring participants’ experiences of learning with medical students from a different background

Prior to starting her PhD, Heather spent several years working as a Widening Participation practitioner and teaching Pupil Premium students in a secondary school. During that time, she completed a Master’s degree in Childhood and Youth Studies, in which the focus was on empowering young people from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.
