Foundation year

Would you like to study for a degree in Education Studies in Southampton? Have you grown up in another country, perhaps even another continent, with a different education system? If the answer to both questions is 'Yes', then the International Foundation year may be perfect for you.

The International Foundation Year has been designed specially for students like yourself who:

You can find more details about the year, including how to apply on the  International Foundation year programme page. You will need to tell us in your application which subject you hope to study at degree level.

Fees and funding

For fees and funding purposes, the foundation year is generally classed as part of a degree course lasting 4 years in total. (It is not a standalone qualification.) The annual tuition fee is identical. You can find out more Fees and funding page.

Other options for language support

If you have had some experience of living in the UK already, or perhaps come from a country in continental Europe, you may still need to reach a higher level level of English language to help you succeed on a degree course.

You may like to consider a shorter, language-intensive course, through the University's Centre for Language Studies, which is a member of The British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP). It can provide a choice of English language classes to suit your needs, typically ranging from 4 to 18 weeks. Accommodation can usually be provided within the tuition fee.

Fluent speakers of English

You may be based either in the UK or elsewhere, fluent in English, but do not yet have A level or equivalent qualifications. Here, we recommend that you build up your subject knowledge and study skills with a qualification from your local Further Education college, or suitable Open University modules. The School of Education Undergraduate Admissions team will be able to advise you.

There were many students attending this course from different cultures, backgrounds and countries. It was a really friendly environment that helped me to exchange ideas with them and to learn more about their academic experiences.
