Katie is currently working as a Research Fellow on the Open Flight Deck project, funded by Innovate UK. She is based within the Human Factors Engineering group.

Katie currently works on the Open Flight Deck project which is a collaborative project with industrial partners; GE Aviation, Rolls-Royce plc. and BAE systems. This project aims to future proof the flight deck by creating an open architecture platform to continuously deliver the latest advances in computing, networking, cloud-based services, AI and automation – enabling aircraft manufacturers to build and customise their own flight deck. As a Research Fellow on the project, Katie brings Human Factors expertise to ensure advances to the flight deck represent the users (airline pilots). This is achieved by applying user-led design process across the design of new flight-deck technologies.

Katie has experience working within industry as a HMI design engineer for dyson (automotive). Here she worked within the evaluation team, assessing and developing all interfaces within the vehicle.

Katie completed her Engineering Doctorate (EngD) at the University of Southampton in 2018. This was an industry sponsored doctorate, working with Jaguar Land Rover. Her thesis focused on the topic of driver distraction and took a novel approach to the road safety issue by applying a sociotechnical systems review of how to study, analyse and remedy the behaviour. The work conducted in the doctorate was published in a book with CRC press titled “A sociotechnical systems approach to Driver Distraction”.
