Professor Veronica Spencer is Deputy Head of School (Education) for Humanities and Professor of Film Studies at the University of Southampton.

I studied for the BA and MA in English at the University of Southampton, and completed my PhD at the University of Manchester with the support of full British Academy funding. My first appointment at University of Southampton was in a Humanities-based school, which gave me the opportunity to contribute to the development of a number of innovative, interdisciplinary Humanities programmes. I am now Professorial Teaching Fellow in the Film department, where I have held all the major roles, including Director of Programmes for four years.

My interests in Film are centred on the operations of ideology as worked out through popular culture.  Alongside this runs an enduring commitment to improving the quality of our educational delivery and our teaching practice, in particular through curriculum design.  I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and increasingly work in areas in the university and nationally where education and quality issues overlap.

Research interests

My research interests in Film centre on ideology and popular culture.  As such, I regularly gave papers to the international conferences of the Popular Culture Association (PCA) and, formerly, of the Society for the Study of Social Imagery (SISSI), both based in the US.

More recent conference papers have been on education.  I have delivered papers to conferences focused on research into education practice in HE, such as Enhancing Student Learning through Innovative Scholarship (ESLTIS), the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) and other

Research project:

Recently, I have been involved in two collaborative research projects, both funded by the Office for Students, which were ongoing on total for three years. For the most recent of these, I ran a research intervention, supported by a team of colleagues in Humanities, for an OfS-funded Catalyst B collaborative project, in partnership with the University of Surrey and the University of Kingston. My project was one of several within the University of Southampton and investigated how to improve students’ assessment literacy and attainment in the key first-year transition period from secondary education to university. The UoS Catalyst B Project work won a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (August, 2018) plus a Collaborative ‘Spotlight’ Award for Teaching Excellence (November 2018), both from Advance HE. The team were also shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (national shortlist 2018).

My current role is Deputy Head of School (Education) for Humanities.  I am Chair of School Programmes Committee and the School Academic Scrutiny and Enhancement Group, and currently serve as a member of the University’s Education Committee and of AQSC.  I have previously been Director of Academic Scrutiny for the Faculty, an external examiner, and a member of Advance HE’s Quality Advisory Board.
