Dr Emma Cowley is Senior Teaching Fellow in Podiatry within Health Sciences and a podiatrist with special interest in musculoskeletal conditions.

From Laetoli to the moon to carbon: footprints are the crumb trail of human endeavour.

My first degree in podiatry heralded a rewarding and diverse career spanning clinical practice in the NHS and private sectors, education, research, enterprise and professional leadership roles with the College of Podiatry and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

I have since specialised in applied biomechanics of the foot and ankle and have also worked closely with colleagues at the College of Podiatry leading the preparation of evidence for a Parliamentary select committee on the effects of high heel wear in the workplace, forming the College of Podiatry position paper on musculoskeletal podiatry and developing the Podiatry Career Framework.

More recently I have worked with College of Podiatry and the Science Council to develop a Registered Scientist pathway, to compliment the Chartered Scientist award for advanced podiatrists.

My research interests are focussed on the dynamics of the foot and ankle in walking and running, along with footwear, orthotic design and function and aetiology of musculoskeletal conditions,

Podiatry was and remains my first career choice due to the broad scope of practice and blend of interventional, interpersonal and scientific / technological attributes.
