Richard Fisher 2015

Hi, I'm Richard Fisher and I studied within Humanities at the University of Southampton.
Southampton is one of the few universities to offer a jazz course and as a jazz musician I was really drawn to it. There is a wide breadth of topics to choose from, allowing you to take part in a range of modules.
What made you choose Southampton?
I really liked the Jazz and Pop course they offered. It is one of the few universities to offer a jazz course and as a jazz musician I was really drawn to it. There is a wide breadth of topics to choose from, allowing you to take part in a range of modules.
What made you choose music?
I was originally undecided between Geography and Music. I really enjoyed both subjects but I realised I had the most fun with Music. I wasn’t as passionate about Geography.
Do you have a standout module?
I have two, which I chose on a whim but they ended up being my favourite modules! I really liked Music and Ethnography which is all about music in different cultures. We looked at music in the Andes, and how it is related to the seasons. I also really enjoyed Global Hip Hop. I’d never really listened to hip hop and hadn’t studied it before. I didn’t know anything about it before the module, but I learnt so much.
Did you take part in any clubs or societies?
Yes, quite a few. I was involved with the Performing Arts societies. I was mainly involved with Concert Band at the time, which was a wind band full of lovely people! I played squash and took part in Surge Radio. I got to interview some of my favourite bands and take part in things I could never have imagined before university. I was also the Music Rep for Performing Arts. I oversaw 15 different societies, everything from folk music to wind orchestras.
What are your plans for the future?
I’ve been offered a job as a music and maths teacher next year, so with training that is the next two years sorted. I’m also thinking about a Masters in the future. I will keep playing, take every opportunity that comes and see what the future holds.
