Tom Wardle is a postgraduate research student, within Modern Languages at the University of Southampton, examining the movement for the recovery of historical memory in Spain. His work is funded by the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

I completed both my BA in French & Spanish (2016) and my MA in Transnational Studies (2017) at the University of Southampton. In September 2018, I returned to the University of Southampton to begin my PhD research.

Research interests

My research looks at how activist groups in Spain are trying to break societal silence regarding the Spanish Civil War (1936-9) and Francoist dictatorship (1939-75) by generating awareness of the crimes committed during this era. By looking through the lens of ‘memory activism’, I seek to demonstrate how debates about how the Spanish past is narrated play out on debates over public, historical representation, monuments and legal campaigns.

PhD supervision

My research is supervised by Dr Scott Soo at the University of Southampton and by Dr Jorge Marco at the University of Bath.

I will be the convenor of the University of Southampton’s Modern Languages Research Group for the 2019-2020 academic year.
