Miss Simone Pfeifer is a postgraduate research student within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

I studied Marine Biology at the University of Rostock, Germany and completed an MSc in Marine Environmental Protection at the University of Bangor in Wales. Following graduation, I worked 8 years as a marine ecologist for the Joint Nature Conservation Committee where I mainly provided technical advice and guidance to UK regulators and industry representatives concerning marine nature conservation, including impact assessment and management.

Research interests

Marine ecology, in particular present-day patterns and dynamics of benthic biodiversity and habitat and species distributions, and understanding the processes that control such patterns at varying spatial and temporal scales. I am also interested in the sensitivity of marine biodiversity to human activities and climate change, and the application of environmental planning, management and conservation approaches to marine ecosystems.

Research project: Regional habitat and megafaunal diversity on the Angolan Margin

In my PhD project, I am integrating biological and environmental data collected from the deep continental margin off Angola to characterise the present megabenthic environment of the area. In particular, my research focusses on identifying patterns in diversity, standing stock and distribution of megabenthic taxa across the different habitats present along the Margin and on testing how the environmental conditions across the study area shape to the observed patterns.
