Ms Hwon Lee is a PhD candidate at the University of Southampton, based in the Institute of Maritime Law at Southampton Law School. Her PhD, funded by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, looks at the use of unmanned maritime Vehicles in threatening and enhancing maritime security.
Ms Hwon Lee has a keen research interest in the use of unmanned maritime vehicles (UMVs) in a maritime security context. She is currently developing her doctoral thesis on 'New Maritime Security Threats and Law Enforcement Activities involving Unmanned Maritime Vehicles', under the primary supervision of Dr Alexandros Ntovas, and the advice of Professor Andrew Serdy.
Ms Hwon received her Bachelor’s degree in Marine Industry and Police at Jeju National University in Korea in 2018 and completed her LLM Maritime Law at the University of Southampton in 2020. During her Master’s studies, she developed an interest in the international law of the sea and admiralty law. Her research interests focus particularly on how those laws can accommodate new technology, such as unmanned maritime vehicles.
