I am currently studying the adoption, diffusion, and use of Martech (marketing technology) by SMEs. Adoption and usage remains low for SMEs and, together with researchers in the UK, US and Australia, we are engaging closely with the SME community to find out more about current practice. In addition I am working with colleagues in my department on the role that digital networks play in helping SMEs to build the resources they need.
My teaching interests follow my research interests closely insomuch that I teach the students how they can help small businesses develop digital marketing strategies and campaigns. I make extensive use of experiential learning whereby students work on live projects for small businesses, giving them the opportunity to put their ideas into practice and also learn a range of important transferable skills.
I followed up a degree in Hospitality Management at the University of Ulster with a postgraduate course in Tourism Management at Strathclyde University, and then proceeded to work in the hospitality and tourism industry for several years in various sales and marketing roles. Folllowing my move into academia I have retained a keen interest in helping businesses to solve real challenges and kept my involvement with the tourism industry through my role as a Board Director with Visit Wiltshire, where I advise on digital marketing.
