Dr Florence Mbithi's background includes an MSc in Mechatronic Systems Engineering from the University of Denver (Denver, CO, USA), where she worked as a Research Assistant (2012-14) within the University of Denver Unmanned Systems Research Institute (DU2SRI). She graduated with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi (Nairobi, Kenya). Florence also worked as an Assistant Lecturer in the department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Nairobi for 2 years prior to pursuing her doctoral degree.
Florence’s doctoral work entailed development of a technical platform & quantitative feasibility analysis for an adaptive prosthetic socket, integrating dynamic monitoring and minimisation of sub-dermal residuum tissue injury risk with active limb-socket interface pressure control, for automatic socket adjustment. This work was driven by her interest in developing technical tools to enhance design and pre-clinical analysis of medical devices, motivated by an aim to provide potential solutions towards clinical impact and socioeconomic benefits for users/patients, healthcare providers and industry.
