About
I am a lecturer in Marine Biology and Ecology within Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.
My work focuses on the ecology of marine predators.
I look at how the biophysical oceanographic environment influences the behaviour and distribution of marine predators and how we can model and forecast these aspects of their ecology in our changing seascapes. Increasingly I am exploring the applied and broader implications of this work – how do we use this information about marine predators for conservation, management and to understand broader ecosystem pattern, process and status? To do this I use data from technologies including animal biologging and remote-sensing, which I analyse with modern, highly quantitative tools like machine learning. Geographically, I focus on the Southern Ocean (Antarctic and Subantarctic).
