I am a senior neonatal trainee in Wessex Deanery and my research work focuses on the growth, nutrition and development of preterm infants. We combine clinical, nutrition and growth data with genomic and metabolomic analysis to reach a deep understanding of how nutrition can help preterm infants to survive the neonatal period and thrive throughout their lives.

Current research
The Growth Assessment of Preterm Infants (GAP) study seeks to understand the nutrition and growth of preterm infants in detail. The families who participate in the study allow us to use clinical and growth information about their infants alongside DNA and urine metabolome samples to understand the growth and development of their babies. These data form the Southampton Preterm Nutrition Database and we collaborate with experts in the university to understand their metabolomic and genomic data. We want to understand what healthy growth looks like for these vulnerable infants, how to support their growth and why some infants respond to nutritional care differently from others.

Biography
I did my medical degree and intercalated BSc at Imperial College London, graduating in 2011. I then moved to Southampton to pursue an Academic Foundation Programme before starting specialist paediatric training in Wessex Deanery. I completed my PhD exploring the factors influencing growth of preterm infants at the University of Southampton in 2023. I started working for the University of Southampton as a Clinical Lecturer in Child Health in October 2023 whilst continuing my subspecialty training in neonatal medicine.
