About the Biomechanics Laboratory

Our Biomechanics Laboratory helps clinical, sporting, research and commercial partners understand human movement, evaluate interventions and address challenges in injury prevention and rehabilitation. We work across a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, tailoring our approach to the needs of each project.

Using advanced motion-analysis technology, we precisely measure movement, forces and muscle activity. These objective measurements reveal how people move and respond to an intervention, helping our partners make confident, evidence-based decisions.

Our research-led team brings together specialist expertise in 3D gait analysis, sports biomechanics, shoulder and upper-limb movement, kinetics and electromyography. We are particularly recognised for our work in shoulder biomechanics and for developing practical assessment methods for both laboratory and real-world settings.

Highlights include

Advanced motion analysis capabilities and expertise

Our cutting-edge technology enables us to analyse movement and mechanics precisely, whether a study takes place in the controlled environment of the laboratory or out in the field. Alongside this capability, we develop and validate protocols for examining everyday activities, with particular expertise in the upper limb and shoulder.

Real-world applications

We translate detailed biomechanical measurements into practical solutions. Our team has developed movement-screening tools to assess control of the hip and lower limb for use in elite sport and military settings. We also evaluate how exercise interventions influence movement and support rehabilitation or the prevention of musculoskeletal conditions. Our work extends to demanding environments, including research into changes in muscle size and mechanical properties in microgravity, helping to explain physical deconditioning during space flight and inform future exercise interventions.

Notable collaborations

Collaboration is central to our approach. We have established partnerships with the Royal Navy, elite sport and commercial organisations, applying our research and technical expertise to challenges that matter in the real world.

Impactful achievements

Our research has moved beyond measurement and into practice. Working with military partners, we have implemented exercise interventions designed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury, demonstrating how our findings can support meaningful improvements in demanding environments.

Biomechanical Services

Our combination of advanced technology and research-led expertise enables us to develop bespoke biomechanical assessments tailored to clinical, sporting, research or commercial requirements.

In addition to our biomechanical services, our high-specification Vicon system, including Vicon Shogun Markerless, supports motion capture for animation, digital media and other bespoke applications.
