Background

Professor Andrea Lista is a Professor of Maritime and Commercial Law and the Director of the Institute of Maritime Law. Andrea' s research interests lie within the areas of International Trade (contracts concluded on shipment terms), the enforcement of maritime claims, international commercial arbitration, and competition law. Andrea has written a number of articles and books on these subjects, which have been cited as authoritative in courts worldwide.

Andrea has lectured for many years in Southampton, London, and Exeter, and taught on professional courses for lawyers and judges at national and international levels. Andrea has also acted as Legal consultant for the European Commission and European Parliament and appeared as expert witness before the Houses of Parliament.

Before re-joining the University of Southampton, Andrea was a Lecturer at Queen Mary College, University of London, an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton (Member of the IML) and Chair in Commercial Law at the University of Exeter.

Throughout his academic career, Andrea has been very actively involved in PhD supervision, having supervised 16 PhD students to completion and has examined a plethora of PhD Vivas in the field of Maritime Commercial Law.

In May 2013, Andrea was awarded the 'ETA Excellence in Teaching Award as the Overall Outstanding Lecturer in the School of Law', University of Southampton, and the 'Vice Chancellor Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching'.  At Exeter, Andrea was commended by the DVC for Education for teaching excellence in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Professionally, Andrea acts as Of Counsel for SLIG LAW LLP in London. He is an active legal consultant for law firms and companies in the fields of maritime commercial law and arbitration.
