Our research

Law attracts great interest and demands lecturing and research provision of the highest calibre.

The IML proud to deliver world-class research as part of the Southampton Law School, nested within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Academic members of IML are committed to producing top-rated research outputs which are published in leading international Maritime Law journals. Institute members also publish updates on new cases and developments in publications such as Lloyd’s Shipping and Trade Law and annual reviews.

Our close ties with the shipping industry and legal profession ensure that the IML is best placed to conduct cutting edge research into maritime issues. Our members specialise inter alia in autonomous shipping regulation, seeking to ensure that the regulatory framework keeps pace with advances in technology.

Research Requests

Research at the IML takes many forms and includes projects for companies and organisations involved in law reform, and projects reviewing the impact of legal developments.

Requests for research can be directed to the Institute administration team or the most appropriate Member.
