Primary Care Research Centre

About us

Good primary care is associated with better health outcomes, lower costs, and greater equity in health.

Good primary care forms the foundation of the UK National Health Service (NHS). 90% of NHS contacts happen in primary care, with general practice alone providing over 300 million consultations a year. Southampton Primary Care Research Centre (PCRC) is an international centre of excellence for research in primary care. It is one of just nine institutions that make up the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.

Southampton PCRC includes a multidisciplinary team of researchers including academic GPs, sociologists, psychologists, statisticians, pharmacists, data scientists, and health sciences researchers. We work collaboratively with many institutions and groups, including other academic departments, NIHR infrastructure (CRN, RDS, BRC, ARC), Southampton Clinical Trials Unit, and partners in charitable organisations and industry.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework PCRC achieved the highest rating in our unit of assessment (UoA2) for outputs with a Grade Point Average of 3.71 and 94% considered as 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading'.
