RYA instructor courses

RYA Dinghy Instructors Pre-Assessment

In order to attend an RYA Dinghy Instructors course candidates must complete a pre-assessment of their sailing skills. This one day direct assessment is aimed at sailors who have a good knowledge of the RYA dinghy scheme and may involve rudderless and spinnaker sailing.

RYA Dinghy Instructors Course


This five day course will be run from the University Boat Hard and is for experienced sailors who wish to teach the RYA National Sailing Scheme. Before taking part candidates must familiarise themselves with the course outlined in the Dinghy Coaching Handbook, which will be given at the time of booking. It is advised that candidates have access to a range of RYA publications that they can use for reference before and after the course. These can be purchased through the RYA or from Southampton Sport.

Pre-entry Requirements: A signed off pre-entry Sailing Assessment, RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate, Safe & Fun Safeguarding course completion certificate and current First Aid certificate.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Pre-Assessment

This one day direct assessment is a pre-requisiste for persons wishing to take part in the RYA Powerboat Instructor course. The day involves practical boat handling to a competent standard similar to that of the direct assessment for Level 2 candidates. Candidates should also be familiar with the RYA course syllabus for powerboating.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Course

This three day course is designed for people who wish to teach the RYA Powerboat Courses up to Level 2. Candidates in possession of the RYA Safety Boat Certificate will also be able to teach the Safety Boat course. Course costs include the RYA Powerboat Instructors Manual which will be given out at the time of booking.

Pre entry Requirements: RYA Power Boat Level 2, Powerboat Instructor Skills-assessment signed off, a current First Aid Certificate and 5 seasons' experience.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor

This course is for experienced powerboat instructors looking to teach the intermediate and advanced courses.

 

Prerequisites:

  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Instructor
  • Advanced Powerboat Course Completion certificate
  • One of the following Certificate of Competence:
    • Advanced Powerboat,
    • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (power)
    • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (power)
  • Commercial Endorsement (Advanced Instructors who do not hold a valid CE will only be able to teach Intermediate powerboat)

 

Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course candidates will be endorsed to run:

Southampton Sport is proud to have secured Simon Winkley as our Windsurfing Trainer to lead all of our Windsurf Instructor courses.  Simon is an active RYA Coach/Trainer, a regular author for RYA Wavelength as well as a Technical Author for WindsurfingUK Magazine whilst still managing to represent Starboard/Severne as a Team Rider.

 

RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor Course

This five-day course has been designed to prepare the budding, yet experienced Windsurfer to teach the RYA Start Windsurfing course. Candidates are expected to be competent to the level of intermediate non-planing and should have a solid understanding of the syllabus.

Pre entry Requirements: Intermediate Windsurfing non-planing Certificate, RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding course completion certificate, a current First Aid Certificate and an RYA Level 2 Powerboat Certificate. RYA membership required.  These pre-requisites may be gained after the course.

RYA Intermediate Windsurfing Instructor Course

This four-day course has been designed to further develop the skills of the Start Windsurfing Instructor so that they may deliver the Intermediate courses using the FastForward coaching tool.

Pre entry Requirements: Intermediate Windsurfing Certificate including beach starting and non-planning carve gybe clinics, a current First Aid Certificate, evidence of 50 hours logged as a Start Windsurfing Instructor. RYA membership required.  These pre-requisites may be gained after the course.

RYA Senior Windsurfing Instructor Course


This four-day course has been designed to prepare people to supervise and be responsible for on-water activities at a RYA training centre.

Pre entry Requirements: Evidence of two seasons' full-time instructing as an RYA Start Windsurfing instructor.  Recommendation by a Principal of a Recognised Training Centre.  Completion of the Senior instructor Workbook and any preparation sent out by the Trainers prior to the course starting.

Course Cancellations/Transfers

We retain the right to cancel a date and transfer your booking or offer you a refund if the weather is unsuitable to run the course on the basis of health and safety. As part of this decision we will be looking at wind, temperature and sea state. Where possible we will give you 24 hours’ notice when a clear and accurate weather forecast comes through.

On the rare occurrence of staff sickness we will endeavour to cover the staff shortage and continue to run the course. This would also be grounds for a refund or date transfer.

For most of our watersports courses we have a minimum ratio of 1:3. Where possible we will always endeavour to run a course but if we are below ratio we may have to transfer you onto a future booking.

Over 7 days before the course: We are happy to offer a full refund or transfer your booking to another date upon request.

Over 48 hours before the course: We will give a full refund upon the presentation of a current doctor’s note.

Less than 48 hours before the course: We are not able to offer a refund

Please note that the time period stated refers to start of the day, not the start of the course.  All refunds are limited to course fees only.  If you book local accommodation, you may choose to take out cancellation/holiday insurance.
