About the project

Applications are now open for the 2024 entry round of two prestigious, fully-funded PhD studentship avenues offered by the University of Southampton: the Black Futures Scholarships, and the Innovation & Social Impact Scholarships.

The Black Futures Scholarship is for talented UK-domiciled Black and mixed-Black heritage students who want to pursue a PhD at Southampton. The scholarship is designed to attract excellent students and enrich our academic community by helping to build a diverse community of students and staff that fully reflects the diversity of wider society.

The Innovation & Social Impact Scholarship is to give UK research students the opportunity to undertake doctoral study and drive social impact. These scholarships are for those looking to make a difference in the world and achieve impact from their research through influencing policy, commercialising their research outputs, or becoming a startup founder.

Because both of these doctoral studentships are student-led – applicants propose their own research project, with support from a small team of potential supervisors – the School of Geography and Environmental Science encourages applicants to contact potential supervisors with a research idea, and work with us to develop a studentship proposal that we can best support from our areas of expertise.

Academics in our School work across a diversity of Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Environmental Science topics, organised within four main Research Groups. To find potential supervisors, follow the links below to see who in our staff are affiliated with each research group:

For enquiries related to the Black Futures Scholarship, contact Dr Julie Vullnetari; for enquiries related to the Innovation & Social Impact Scholarship Scholarship, contact Prof Jim Wright. (See "Potential Supervisors" tab for contact details.)
