Victor Burgin is an artist and writer.

He was educated at the Royal College of Art and Yale University, and holds honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Liège and Sheffield Hallam University. He is Professor Emeritus of History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz; Emeritus Millard Chair of Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and Visiting Professor, European Graduate School, Saas-Fee/Valletta. In 2015 Burgin was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago; in Autumn 2016 he will be a Mellon Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Burgin’s theory books include Parallel Texts: interviews and interventions about art (2011), Situational Aesthetics (2009), The Remembered Film (2004), In/Different Spaces: place and memory in visual culture (1996), The End of Art Theory: criticism and postmodernity (1986), and Thinking Photography (1982). Monographs on his visual work include Five Pieces for Projection (2014), Components of a Practice (2008), and Victor Burgin: Objets Temporels (2007), Presses Universitaires de Rennes. His most recent books include Projective (2015), Scripts (2016), and Palmanova (2016). He most recently exhibited his work in Barthes/Burgin, at the John Hansard Gallery. Upcoming exhibitions this year are at Galeria Lia Rumma, Naples; Cristin Tierney Gallery, New York; Slought Foundation, Philadelphia; and Bridget Donahue, New York. Burgin’s still and moving image work is represented in public collections that include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum and The Tate, London; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
