Amy is an MRes Advanced Biological Sciences student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated with First Class Honours from the University of South Wales in 2019 with the degree BSc Natural History.

For my dissertation I analysed the extent of hybridisation between two iguanas on the island of Utila, Honduras. The black spiny tailed iguana (Ctenosaura similis) and Utila spiny tailed iguana (Ctenosaura bakeri) have been known to breed and produce fertile hybrids, and I was able to analyse samples collected by PhD student Daisy Maryon, who is still investigating this hybridisation.

Research interests

My current research project is using the Net-Map Tool to determine how water quality of the River Test and River Itchen is governed. With the knowledge of how the Rivers’ governance is structured, we hope to be able to inform policy and begin to improve the sub-optimal water quality of the rivers.

My previous research projects include:

  • How the introduction of public roads have influenced the distribution of native butterflies in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica
  • Marine fauna and macrophage abundance and diversity surveys of the coral reefs on Andros Island, The Bahamas
  • Insect abundance and diversity surveys using pitfall traps in Mashatu, Botswana

I chose the MRes in Advanced Biological Sciences primarily for its breadth of available modules that complement my project. The other influencing factor for choosing this course was the freedom to develop a project that best suited my interests, in collaboration with my supervisor.

After completing my MRes I hope to continue my postgraduate research with a PhD in ecology and conservation. Following this, I hope to work in sustainable development and ecosystem conservation.
