Miss Magda Steele BSc

Postgraduate Research Student in Biological Sciences

Miss Magda Steele's photo

Magda is a Postgraduate Research Student in the Plant Microbe Ecology laboratory at the University of Southampton.

Prior to starting her PhD, Magda has worked on the technical team of Meiosis Ltd which included the trialling, disease testing and intellectual property management of soft fruit varieties. During her time as technical assistant, Magda developed her interest in beneficial plant-microbe interactions and ecosystem services.

Combining her understanding of ecology and skills gained from working in horticultural sector Magda decided pursue an interdisciplinary postgraduate degree in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Geography and Environmental Science.

Career History

2016-2018: Technical Assistant at Meiosis Ltd.

Academic qualifications

2013-2016: BSc Ecology, University of East Anglia, UK.

Research interests

Magda is currently investigating the linkages between below and above ground peatland communities and relating these to the provision of ecosystem services, primarily carbon storage. Climatic variables can drive critical changes in community composition and associated ecosystem functioning however the extent of these is not yet fully understood. Using observations of present day peatlands, and palaeological data obtained from peat cores, Magda will meet this knowledge gap.
