Module Aims

The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity for a critical study in depth of a topic chosen by the student after consultation with the coordinator and an appropriate supervisor.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Produce a dissertation of about 9,000 words on an agreed research topic
  • Use library and other IT facilities to access scientific information
  • Assimilate information and synthesise scientific hypotheses
  • Produce scientific hypotheses and critically evaluate evidence in support of them

Syllabus

This module is designed for students who are taking an undergraduate or postgraduate Masters degree. After discussion with an assigned member of staff the student will select a topic and discuss a specific area of the topic with an appropriate member of staff who will then supervise the project.

Assessment

Assessment Strategy

Assessment will be based on the dissertation of about 9,000 words plus figures and its presentation at a viva with the supervisor and one other member of staff. Projects are assessed on the basis of scientific content (60%), written presentation (20%), written summary for the layman or research proposal (10%) and viva (10%).
