Leadership and Innovation in Healthcare (MSc)
Tomorrow's healthcare professionals will work in a context characterised by continual change, challenging environments, rapidly evolving technologies and the need for innovation. To operate successfully in this context, these professionals must be able to influence the delivery of high quality, safe healthcare, and support the continuous development of themselves, their profession, and the wider multi-disciplinary team.
To do this, they must be able to lead themselves, working autonomously, or as an equal partner with a range of other professionals, and be able to operate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
This module is concerned with the application of leadership and management to deliver and improve these complex healthcare systems. Rather than examining leadership in a vacuum, we will instead critically evaluate what leadership is and how it is applied to influence change in healthcare settings. We will discuss and analyse concepts, theories, characteristics, tools, and practices across five broad themes of (1) teamwork and team leadership, (2) change and innovation (including digital innovation), (3) service improvement, (4) ergonomics, human factors, and risk management, (5) continuously developing yourself, your profession, and others. Much of the module will be spent in critical discussions and will involve in depth analysis of case studies that illustrate the five central domains of the module. -

Leadership and Management
This module takes place in Semester 2 and builds on the skills you have acquired in engaging people with change. Taking on leadership responsibilities is a key requirement of clinical psychologists and this module covers the leadership and management skills essential for psychologists (and anyone
working in teams or organizations) to develop.
Effective leadership for clinical psychologists at all career stages can be strengthened by an awareness of personal qualities and values and the application of psychological skills and knowledge. The module encourages you to reflect on your experiences of having worked in small groups and to think about how your psychological understanding eg. of diversity or response to loss,
can be transferred to different situations such as managing change in teams.
Leadership involves developing services and you will be helped to set up a placement to provide you with experience in a health/mental health/caring setting to help you to develop theory practice links and to set the context for designing a small scale service development. You will be taught how to find funding for the proposed development, a key skill in these times of austerity. -

Leadership: A Diverse, Inclusive and Critical Approach
There is a pressing need for leadership to evolve in response to global changes. Such challenges include: a massive paradigm shift in work practices as a result of the global pandemic; changes in the political landscape; as well as concerns over the climate crisis – all of which need organisations, and other powerful stakeholders to take a more principled perspective.
An all-encompassing and radical approach to leadership is needed, which is diverse, inclusive, and critical. The module will introduce a range of theories and approaches of leadership, and challenge learners into looking at leadership more critically. The usefulness and application of leadership theories across the organisational, cultural, and global contexts will be critically examined. -
