Professor Marion Demossier is a Professor in French and Social Anthropology at the University of Southampton.

Passionate about Ethnography and Interdisciplinarity, Southampton is the best place for it

Marion Demossier is a socio-anthropologist by training while having developed her career in Modern Languages Departments. She is passionate about teaching ethnography as a modern languages method and believes that ethnographic theories and practices provide a unique mode of analysis of contemporary cultures and societies. Her research seeks to engage with different forms of ethnographies in diverse geographic locations, at different historical junctures and across humanities and social sciences.

Marion Demossier is Professor of French and Anthropology in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton. She was Head of Department from 2015-2018. She has previously taught French and European politics and society since 1994 at the University of Bath. She holds a Ph.D in Social Anthropology from the EHESS (École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) in Paris.

She has published three monographs, 4 edited volumes and more than twenty scholarly articles in leading academic journals in Britain, France and the United-States, including the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Cultural Analysis, the Anthropological Journal of European Cultures and Modern and Contemporary France. She has also written widely for a student audience, contributing chapters to prestigious series such as A companion to the Anthropology of Europe or Culinary Taste. She has been involved as expert with the wine industry in France and New Zealand over a period of twenty-five years.

She is regularly invited to lecture at international conferences and has appeared on both television and national radio in the UK and France to discuss issues related to her work. She is currently on the ESRC Peer Review Panel member ‘Anthropology of Europe’ since 2010- reappointed until 2019 and sits on the UNESCO Climats de Bourgogne scientific Committee member and is a member of the UNESCO network Chair Culture of Wine, Dijon since 2006.

Research interests

Ethnography-Environmental Change-Wine Culture-Museums-

My research lies with the study of ‘culture in context’ through ethnography as the primary research method. I have just completed a third monograph ‘Burgundy: a global anthropology of place and taste’ based upon over thirty-years of return ethnographic investigation. I am now interested in exploring environmental futures by working closely between science and professional knowledge in the Anthropocene.

Other areas of research include the anthropology of French and European politics as well as museums and ‘the political’. I am currently working in Lyons with the ‘Musée des Confluences’.

PhD Supervision

Any areas of French studies related to urban spaces, museums, politics, migration and rural/urban connections. I also supervise any anthropological projects covering my areas of interest. 

PhD research

First supervisor with Dr Heidi Armbruster: Natural Wine; ethnographies of drug sharing & consumption among internationally mobile young adults. With prof. Rod Rhodes: Interpreting in Health contexts (cross-Faculty). With Jaine Beswick: Ethnographies of Mutilingualism in Southampton.

Second supervisor ESRC 3+1 co-supervision with dr. Natalya Vince University of Portsmouth: the massacre of Oradour sur Glane: memories from below; AHRC DPT with prof. Hanna Diamond Cardiff University: Catholicism and social housing in France. With dr Stephanie Jones and Florian Stadler, University of Exeter: Literary and Ethnographic Representations of Refugee Emplacement Processes in the UK. With dr Adriana Patino: transnational families and multilingualism. With dr Ying Wang: Identity construction through English as a lingua franca; Language Ideologies in Chinese Primary English Language Education.

Co-supervisor with prof.Denis Monnerie, University of Strasbourg: Etude anthropologique sur les techniques viticoles et l’innovation dans les vignobles alsaciens. 

Research projects

I am currently working on a project ‘World Wine Stories’ which aims to create a multidisciplinary debate around wine production in an era of climate change. It aims to provide a global forum where different voices can come together.

I am also developing my training in ethnographic documentary films following her two weeks short course introduction at the Granada Centre (University of Manchester).
