Dr. Charles Wood is a Research Fellow within the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton.

Charlie started in pure and applied mathematics, before moving into physics and engineering technology. He joined the University of Southampton in 2016 after completing a PhD with the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, focusing on direct energy conversion, magnetohydrodynamics and multiphase flow.

Charlie has worked with several groups across the university. He is currently an active member of the Energy Technology Research Group.

As part of a 6-month KTP, Charlie completed Leadership and Management training to CMI Level 5, before acting as a research consultant for industry.

He is part of the Air Quality Forum at the University of Southampton, looking to use his expertise to investigate methods for reducing the generation and inhalation of particulate matter and compound molecular gases that have been linked to human health.

Charlie’s strengths are mathematical modelling, experimental validation, and interdisciplinary research. He is particularly interested in developing disruptive technology and using mathematical methods for modelling complex physical processes.
