Dr. Charles Wood is a Research Fellow within the Energy Technology Research Group at the University of Southampton.

Charlie studied mathematical sciences full-time at levels 2 and 3 with the Open University whilst working as a postman, before joining the University of Portsmouth to study mechanical engineering, graduating with first-class honours. After this, Charlie began an EPSRC Industrial CASE Award PhD with the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy and Queen Mary University of London, focussing on direct energy conversion, magnetohydrodynamics, thermodynamic power cycles and energy efficiency. Charlie obtained his PhD in 2015.

Shortly after this, Charlie joined the University of Southampton as a postdoctoral research fellow within the ISVR Signal Processing and Control Group, working closely with the μ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre on Project CAN, funded by Innovate UK. This involved developing robotic systems for X-ray computed laminography, a technique well-suited for the study of specimens with large aspect ratios, such as carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) and fossils.

After completing Leadership and Management training to CMI Level 5 during a 6-month KTP, Charlie then worked as a research consultant within industry. He has now rejoined the university to work on the Horizon 2020 ALION project.

Charlie has experience with developing mathematical models for thermal, fluidic and multiphase systems, and experience building DAQ rigs to validate models. He is particularly interested in developing disruptive technology for the aerospace and medical sectors, and using mathematical methods for modelling complex physical processes.
