Dr Yi Huang is Senior Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Dr Yi Huang received her PhD in Metallurgy and Materials from the University of Birmingham. After that she worked as research associate at University of Southern California and Cambridge University for several years. Later she moved to an automotive company, JVM Castings Ltd, as materials engineer. Before joining University of Southampton, she was a research fellow at Advanced Forming Research Center (AFRC) of University of Strathclyde.

Dr Yi Huang’s past work experience has covered a wide range of materials (nickel-based superalloys, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, titanium alloys, ferrous alloys and metal matrix composites) and different manufacturing processes (casting, rolling, extrusion, forging and superplastic forming, ECAP, HPT). She is interested in microstructure evolution and materials mechanical behavior during deformation process.

Research interests

  • Ultrafine-grained materials processing using severe plastic deformation techniques (ECAP, HPT etc.);
  • Superplasticity of metals and ceramics;
  • Microstructure development during deformation process and their effects on properties;
  • Constitutive modeling using Artificial Neural Networks.
