Miss Dominique Townsend MSc, BSc, GMICE

Postgraduate research student

Dominique is a coastal engineering postgraduate, who has worked in both public and private sectors. She has experience in beach design, sediment budget analysis and coastal zone management. Her PhD topic is the ‘Rapid Survey of the Nearshore Zone using aerial and surface vehicles’ for Pevensey Bay, East Sussex.

Whilst working at Jacobs, Dominique worked closely with both the Environment Agency and local authorities on a number of projects along the East coast of England. She was heavily involved in several FCERM schemes, where she provided technical assistance, developed the economic business cases and acted as assistant project manager. Other work included policy review, geomorphological change assessment (for a number of coastal sediment systems) and asset management.

From her time at Canterbury City Council, Dominique has extensive experience in the collection, analysis and quality assurance of topographic beach data, which involved the management of a small team of staff.  She contributed to the Regional Shingle Beach Management Plans which, effectively, cover the coastline from Sheerness, part of the Greater Thames Estuary, to Selsey Bill in West Sussex. She also carried out routine coastal asset inspections.

Dominique was inspired to study a masters in Coastal Engineering after reviewing the Langstone Harbour tern island project (which created suitable nesting sites for little terns (Sternula albifrons) through the construction of shingle islands) as part of an internship with the RSPB. She graduated in 2014 with Distinction.

Research interests

  • Coastal geomorphology and sediment transport,
  • Coastal management and policy,
  • Novel topographic/bathymetric survey methods.
