The University of Southampton
Institute of Maritime Law

Visiting Academic Programme

***The Institute’s library is currently closed and has remained so since March 2020, the decision has been made that we will not be opening to external visitors until January 2022 at the earliest. This will be dependent on the up to date policy from both the University and UK Government, however if you are planning to visit in 2022 you are welcome to get in touch to start the application process.***

Here at the Institute of Maritime Law we are proud of the resources we have built over many years for our Philippa Kaye Library in Maritime Law.

The library is not a lending library but we do welcome applications from academics and researchers from around the globe who wish to come and use the library for private research. We cannot offer a full collaboration/supervision with our academics, so you would need to be applying to come for independent research. Our members are however, time permitting, always happy to arrange to meet and discuss the research of our visitors if relevant to their field.

Should you wish to enquire about the opportunity to spend time in our Library as a Visiting Academic then please get in touch by sending an email for the attention of our Librarian Sara Le Bas She will then send you the details required for the application along with details of applicable bench fees, if you can indicate the preferred dates of your visit in the initial email it would be appreciated.

** Please note that all applications are subject to approval by the Director of the Institute of Maritime Law, it can take up to 2 months from your approval to getting your account set up. Please bear this time frame in mind when applying to avoid disappointment.

We are not able to accept applications from visiting PhD students, these must be made with the Southampton Law School.**
