Jessica McIvor is a postgraduate research student in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton and the University of Bristol, funded by the AHRC South West Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

I completed my Master of Languages (Languages and Contemporary European Studies) at the University of Southampton in 2017 and subsequently began my PhD, which is funded by the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. My PhD is a comparative project focusing on photographic narratives of women’s militancy in 20th century Ireland and Spain. I am supervised by Dr Scott Soo and co-supervised by Dr Erika Hanna (University of Bristol) and Dr Jane Lavery.

You can follow my research on Twitter via @jessmcivor.

Research interests

My research focuses on constructions of photographic narratives of women’s militancy in Ireland and Spain from 1916 to 1939, particularly examining how this was presented in press photography. It seeks to deconstruct simplistic narratives of “rediscovery” through analysis of the processes of neglect and delegitimisation, and uses an innovative framework focusing on invisibilities to do so.
